The Rehabilitation and Recreation Centre on the Sobieszewo Island near Gdańsk, is one of the branches of The Polish Association for Care of the Blind in Laski and is connected with The Educational Centre for the Blind children in Laski.
The Centre in Sobieszewo has been operating since 1946.Since its very beginning it served
the blind children from Laski, together with the nuns from the Franciscan Order, the Cross's Servants. The recreation periods for the blind children and adults from Laski were organised here. The batches were organised only in summer because there was in the Centre only the very old of German origin wooden hut.
In the 60 and 70 years the summer houses were built together with the summer gastronomy facilities. The area of the centre was adapted to the safety and the needs of the blind
Every year nearly 120 blind and very short-sighted spent summer in the centre but the demand was much higher.
That is why in 1983 a new building with the rooms and the dining- room was erected in the area of the centre and the rehabilitation periods could have been organised all over the year
Unfortunately in 1992 the new building was burnt down in the fire that took place in the centre. As the result the centre was forced to restrict the rehabilitation periods to summer. Due to the lack of funds it was impossible to rebuild the building.
Starting in 1998 the Association for the blind undertook to rebuilt the burnt building and to organise the batches all over the year and to conform to all the rules and regulations for such institutions. The old buildings were refurbished and the kitchen and the dinnig room was rebuilt.
Between 2002/2003 the centre started to operate all over the year.
